Giving it a Shot: 10 Steps to Get Involved in Ice Hockey

Getting into a new sport can be intimidating! But it can also be exciting! Here are some steps to help get you started!:

1. Research Local Programs: The first step in this journey is to find a hockey league in your area. Website like USA Hockey can help locate nearby rinks and programs. Explore the different options and see what catches your eye! Check out what they have to offer, registration dates, and their open skate schedule for newcomers. If you are on the search for an all-girls team or program, search accordingly as unfortunately all organizations do not offer this.

2. Attend Local Games: Whether it’s youth games or professional NHL games, this will give you a better feel for the game. NHL games are a fun way to see a fast-paced game and get involved in the teams’ fan base. These leagues often have programs for youth and may be a great place to get involved. Watching local youth games is a great way to gauge the level of competition in your area, as well as meet fellow parents or players already involved in the game.

3. Collect Equipment: Although equipment can be pricy, it is an essential part of the game.  Reach out to local organizations for options to lend gear or for recommendations on where to find lightly worn gear. You’ll need a stick, skates, helmet, gloves, shoulder pads, elbow pads, shin guards, a jock or jill strap or shorts, hockey socks, hockey pants, and a practice jersey.

4. Learn the Basics: Hockey, like any sport, can be confusing at first if you don’t know the rules of the game. Before getting started teach yourself the basics. Familiarize yourself with the different positions, layout of the game, penalties, lines on the ice, and some of the game vocabulary. With this basic knowledge, you will have a good head-start on the foundation of the game.

5. Take a Learn-To-Skate or Learn-To-Play Session: The best way to get on the ice for the first time is by taking a lesson. Whether it is just a learn-to-skate or learn to play, this will get you comfortable on the ice. Most programs or rinks offer these sessions, providing a safe,  supportive, and educational environment for new players. Check out your local organizations to see what they have available.

6. Practice Your Skills: The best way to get into hockey is to keep practicing! Skating alone doesn’t come easy, let alone adding in a stick and puck and making a whole game out of it. Be patient with yourself and continue to practice. With time and dedication to the game, you will start to see progress on the ice.

7. Commit to the Game: Like anything, trying something new can be so scary and when you aren’t perfect at it right away you may want to walk away. If you take anything from this list I hope you choose to stick with it! Stick with it when your feet hurt because your skates are uncomfortable or you can’t seem to get the puck in the net. At some point your skates will feel like slippers and you will be scoring goals left and right. Overcoming these obstacles builds resilience and character which in the end will make you a better player.

8. Celebrate Your achievements: Recognize and celebrate every milestone, no matter how big or small. Whether it is a new learned skill, goal scored, or even minute played, it is worth a celebration. By appreciating all of these little things, the game will become so much more fun and so rewarding!

9. It’s Bigger than a Game: Hockey is a game full of life lessons. Embrace these! Playing on a team gives you an idea of teamwork, leadership, commitment, and self-discipline. Embrace these life lessons as they translate to life outside the rink. They make hockey special!

10. Have fun!: Above all else, have fun doing this! It is a new adventure and something you will continue to get more comfortable with over time. It is about more than winning or losing, and when you can understand that, you can conquer it all!

Remember, hockey is for everyone, regardless of age or experience level. So, it’s never too late to dive in, give it a shot, and enjoy all that you learn through the sport!
